The all-new M8 is ENVE’s flagship gravity wheelset, for the weight-conscious rider that typically pedals up what they come down. It’s an excellent choice for enduro riding, bike parks, and courses where smooth terrain and/or weight savings trump the need for the added flat protection of the M9 Pro with its Protective Rim Strip.
The M8 is the result of a more than 4-year development project during which ENVE worked closely with its professional downhill athletes and teams to create a carbon rim that achieved the damped, quiet, ride attributes of alloy, but with the toughness and durability of carbon fiber. The M8 is the result of this effort and raises the bar for gravity wheel performance.
In terms of objective improvements, the M8 is 73% more compliant than the previous generation M730, and 76% more compliant than the M930. In addition to the drastic improvements in compliance, the M8 is 20% more impact-resistant when compared to the previous generation models.
Like all new M Series wheelsets, the M8’s rims feature unique shapes and constructions front to back. To accommodate the modern rider’s preference for 2.4-2.5” wide tires, the M8’s front rim features an internal rim width of 32mm, and the rear is 29mm. The front rim’s additional width and lighter construction maximize compliance, traction, and tire stability. The rear rim has been optimized for power transmission, tracking, and durability.
TECHNOLOGIES
Wide Hookless Bead Pinch Flat Protection
The M5 Pro, M6, and M8 wheels all feature ENVE’s patented Wide Hookless Bead technology built into the rim. It features a wide-rim bead to dissipate impact forces across a broader surface area when a tire is bottomed out on an object. This reduces the likelihood of pinch-flats by 50%. The rear rim features a wider rim wall than the front, as our data and real-world testing have found rear rims will pinch flat most often. The new M Series' compliant design further aids in pinch-flat reduction.
Unique Front and Rear Widths and Construction
Each wheel in the new M Series 5th Generation lineup features unique front and rear rim construction. The front rim is more compliant to allow the wheel and tire to contour over and around terrain, reducing the jarring sensations of repeated frontal impacts. The rear is firmer, to maximize power transmission and impact toughness. Widths are optimized for front and rear tires, with the front rim running slightly wider than the rear.
External Nyloc Locking Nipples
All M Series rims feature ENVE's patented molded spoke hole technology (US Patent #8,313,155 B2), but now with external locking nipples. Each nipple is equipped with a Nyloc insert to keep spokes tensioned and wheels true.
